Edi Tchakoma, Founder and Executive Director of HDF Malawi

“I know what it feels like to grow up without certainty, support, or opportunity. That is why I am committed to making sure vulnerable children and struggling families are not left behind.”

— Edi Tchakoma, Founder & Executive Director

A journey that began in displacement.

Edi Tchakoma’s story began in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where armed conflict and instability forced him to flee as a young child. Arriving alone at Dowa Refugee Camp in Malawi, he carried little more than the hope of survival.

Growing up in the camp as an orphan, Edi witnessed firsthand the weight of poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to education. He saw countless children around him struggle — not for lack of ability, but for lack of access and opportunity.

Rather than allowing those experiences to define him, Edi became determined to create the opportunities he never had — and to extend them to others facing the same realities.

“Displacement teaches you what truly matters. It strips away everything except the will to keep going — and the hope that someone, somewhere, will believe in you.”

— Edi Tchakoma

The family who opened their door.

At the most vulnerable point of his life, a compassionate Malawian family chose to take Edi in — offering not just shelter, but a genuine sense of home, belonging, and unconditional love. This single act of human kindness altered the entire trajectory of his life.

Among them, Mr. Bright M emerged as a father figure in the truest sense — a man whose steadfast guidance, quiet encouragement, and deep belief in Edi’s potential gave him the foundation to dream beyond his circumstances. Today, Mr. Bright M remains closely connected to the mission of HDF Malawi, continuing to support the work on the ground in Malawi with the same generosity of spirit that first changed Edi’s life.

This family is not simply part of our history — they are part of our reason for existing. Their story is proof of what one compassionate act can set in motion. It is because of their love and ongoing support that HDF Malawi reaches vulnerable children and families across Malawi today.

“Mr. Bright became the father I never had. His belief in me — when the world offered little reason for it — is the foundation every program we run is built upon.”

— Edi Tchakoma, on Mr. Bright M & his adoptive family

Founding Human Development Foundation Program.

In 2017, while still a teenager, Edi began developing the vision that would become Human Development Foundation Program in Malawi — a community-rooted initiative to support vulnerable children, youth, and families through education, skills development, healthcare, and practical community programs.

In 2018, he launched the organization’s first grassroots activities. Without formal funding, office space, or institutional backing, he worked directly within communities — reaching families with whatever resources were available to him.

In September 2025, the Human Development Foundation Program was formally registered as a recognized NGO in Malawi under the Trustees Incorporation Rules. Today, community-based programs continue across Malawi, focused on education, food security, healthcare, vocational training, and community empowerment.

One act of compassion can change the world for one child — and through that child, change it for thousands.

Father Figure & Lifelong Supporter

When Edi had no one, Mr. Bright M and his family became his family. They welcomed him into their home with open hearts, asking nothing in return — only believing that every child deserves the chance to grow, learn, and thrive in safety and love.

Mr. Bright M’s influence is woven into every program HDF Malawi delivers. His values — dignity, generosity, and quiet determination — are the values at the heart of our work. He continues to support HDF Malawi’s operations on the ground in Malawi to this day, serving as a living example of the community-centered spirit that defines our organization.

Every donation to HDF Malawi honours the spirit of this family — and extends that spirit to the next child who needs it most.

From a single vision to a two-continent organization.

Growing impact across two continents
Programs in Malawi continue serving communities through education, healthcare, food security, and vocational training — while Canadian operations build newcomer support networks and international partnerships.

A second home. A wider mission.

In 2024, Edi relocated to Canada in search of new opportunities and a more stable future. Like many newcomers, he navigated the challenges of rebuilding — finding professional networks, establishing credibility, and creating pathways, despite bringing significant experience and leadership with him.

Through this experience, he recognized that skilled immigrants and refugees across Canada face similar barriers — underemployment, limited mentorship, and difficulty navigating Canadian systems and workplace expectations.

In 2026, HDF Malawi was formally registered in British Columbia, Canada, as a nonprofit society — expanding the mission to support newcomers and underserved communities through settlement support, mentorship, employment pathways, and community integration.
