A message from our founder

Seven years ago, I made a promise.

“I know what it feels like to need help and not find it. HDF is my answer to that feeling.”

When I founded HDF — first in Canada, then in Malawi — I did so with one conviction: that every person, regardless of where they were born or what they have lost, deserves the dignity of opportunity. That conviction has not changed.

This report is our accountability to you. Not just a collection of numbers, but the true story of what your generosity has built — in classrooms in Lilongwe, in clinics in Dowa, in the lives of newcomers finding their feet in British Columbia, and in the hands of young people in Malawi who now have skills, income, and hope.

I have seen firsthand what changes when one person decides to give. A child stays in school. A family eats. A young woman opens a business. A newcomer finds community. These are not small things. They are everything.

On behalf of every person you have supported this year — thank you. Your trust is something we do not take lightly, and your impact is something we will never stop measuring.

What your giving funds

Four programmes. One mission.

Each programme below represents a distinct area of need — and a distinct community of people whose lives your generosity has changed.

01 Education & Orphan Care · Malawi

Keeping orphaned children in school — one term at a time

Our education programme provides school fees, uniforms, books and daily meals for orphaned and vulnerable children across Lilongwe and Dowa. We also run structured learning groups in communities where formal schooling is out of reach, bringing education directly to where families live.

“My daughter now reads to me every evening. Before HDF came, she had never held a pencil.” — Community parent, Lilongwe

02 Healthcare Outreach · Malawi

Mobile clinics reaching families who would otherwise have no care at all

HDF’s mobile health outreach brings trained health workers, testing kits, medicines and nutrition support directly into rural villages. We go where hospitals cannot — and we go regularly, building the kind of consistent health relationships that prevent crises before they begin.

“The HDF team came and tested all the children. We had never had anyone do that before.” — Mother, Dowa District

03 Vocational Training · Malawi

135 graduates. 75% now earning. One programme that keeps growing.

Our vocational education and training programme teaches practical skills — tailoring, computing, construction and more — to young Malawians who would otherwise have no pathway to income. Each graduate leaves with something that cannot be taken from them: the ability to earn.

“HDF taught me to sew. Now I have three employees and my children eat every day.” — VET Graduate, Lilongwe

04 Food Security · Malawi

Ensuring no child goes to school hungry, and no family goes to bed without eating

Hunger and learning cannot coexist. HDF’s food security programme provides emergency food packages and regular nutritional support to vulnerable families — including school feeding for enrolled children. When hunger is addressed, everything else becomes possible.

“After the floods took everything, HDF came within days. They brought food and hope.” — Family, Flood-affected community

Settlement services, mentorship, employment support and community integration in BC

From alone in a new land, to home in a real community.

Arriving in Canada is only the beginning. The real work — building confidence, credentials, friendships and belonging — is what HDF Canada provides every day in British Columbia.

“When I arrived in Canada I knew no one and understood nothing. HDF connected me to people, to work, and to a future.”

Stories from the field

Behind every number, a person.

Numbers tell us what changed. Stories tell us why it matters. These are the voices your generosity has given something to say.

Children in learning groups — HDF Malawi Education · Malawi

From never holding a pencil to reading every evening

Before HDF’s learning programme reached Ntedere, her daughter had never been to school. Today she reads aloud to her mother every evening — in a household that had never owned a book.

“My daughter now reads to me every evening. Before HDF came, she had never held a pencil.”
HDF vocational training — tailoring programme Skills Training · Malawi

A sewing machine became a business, and three people have jobs

She had no income and no prospects when she joined HDF’s vocational training programme. Two years later, she runs her own tailoring business — and employs three people from her community.

“HDF taught me to sew. Now I have three employees and my children eat every day.”
HDF mobile healthcare — community outreach Healthcare · Malawi

The first health check this village had ever received

When HDF’s mobile team arrived in her village with testing kits and medicines, it was the first time anyone had come to check on the children’s health. She still talks about that day.

“The HDF team came and tested all the children. We had never had anyone do that before.”
Looking ahead

What we are building next.

Your continued support makes these next steps possible. Every goal below depends on donors like you choosing to give again.

01

Expand orphan sponsorship

Reach more orphaned children across Malawi with individual sponsorship profiles — connecting each child with a committed donor who follows their journey directly.

02

CRA charitable registration

Our Canadian charitable status application is currently under review. Once confirmed, every Canadian donor will receive an official tax receipt — retroactively where applicable.

03

Deepen community health outreach

Increase frequency of mobile health visits and expand into more remote communities that currently receive no regular medical care whatsoever.
